Robin, is the .50 the largest caliber handgun in the world? If there is a larger gun, do you own one?
Karl, in the US it is essentially illegal to manufacture firearms of caliber greater than .50 ( to oversimplify - muzzleloaders are outside this regulation for example ). So you are not going to find modern handguns of caliber greater than .50 . However, there are a couple of different varients of handgun cartridges at the .50 caliber mark ( e.g., the .50 Linebaugh, .50 Action Express ) and I'm reluctant to say conclusively that the .500 S&W Magnum is the most powerful although it probably is.
I don't actually own a .500 S&W Mag, but my hunting buddy does and I've had the opportunity to fire it. Great fun.
