Breaking news! Reefer madness is REAL! This revelation has allowed scientists to explain the range of behaviors exhibited at Soho Street, Taichung. There are still no known adverse psychological effects from Budweiser and Jack Daniels.

The War Nerd wants to become a Sikh. Gary, as a Sikh, you will at some point need to go do some weird ablution thing at the Golden Temple in India. I've see that temple, and yer not going to like it. Especially the bathing part.

Interesting graph on prison population. Its nice to see that our government and law enforcement agencies are doing their job and keeping the riff raff off the street.

There are certainly some large disparities in the graph that surprised me (not.)

Does Michael Moore know that Cuba the workers' paradise is also a world class prison nation? We have the excuse of the drug war...what's Fidel's?

How do India and Japan keep so few people in prison!?!

I'd like to compare our state crime rates with the European rates. You know, to see how North Dakota fares as opposed to Florida. (Hot weather vs. Cold)

Or is it that generous unemployment and methadone clinics means that Europeans have fewer tweakers and junkies doing crimes? But the UK rate is still double that of Denmark for instance!

Taiwan is 281/100,000 by the way. Now that is suprising.

Taiwan is 281/100,000 while Hong Kong is 157/100,000.

What could explain that differential?

The three states with the lowest ratio of imprisoned to civilian population are, as of 2004, Maine (148 per 100,000), Minnesota (171 per 100,000), and Rhode Island (175 per 100,000). The three states with the highest ratio are Louisiana (816 per 100,000), Texas (694 per 100,000), and Mississippi (669 per 100,000). [2]

Seeing as Canada's rate is 107/100K, I'd guess if we take out drug charges, then those states would be the same as Canada's.

Gary likes the kirpa though, I'll bet. Not that there is anything wrong with that ...
