Cultural Comparisons

From The Sun: Why England is better than Oz. My first thought was that the premise is ridiculous- no country could be cooler than a place that has flying monkeys, unless you had flying monkeys with hand grenades. Turns out, 'Oz' is some kind of quaint British slang for Australia. So the article compares the beers, the beaches, the women, etc., while managing to stay fairly quiet on the topics of food and orthodontic care. The article has left me with several questions:

What are 'The Ashes'?

What's the difference between Marmite and Vegemite? And what's Bovril?

Of all the musical talent that has come out of England, why do they cite the Sex Pistols? Why not Iron Maiden?

Who is Grant Mitchell, and who is his Oz counterpart Toadfish?

Australians often refer to the English as Pom or Pommy, whereas people in South Africa use the term Rooinek, meaning 'red neck'. If you took all the best rugby players from England and Australia, and combined them into one super-team, why would both nations' beer still suck so bad?

The "ashes" , it's a cricket match between England and OZstralia, been going on for 120 years or so, "ashes" refer to actual ashes left from burning the original stumps from the first game, the winner each year get's possession of the urn.
Vegemite=yeast extract
Marmite=Onion flavored yeast extract
Bovril=beef flavored

Sex Pistols were great! Seminal band. Stole all their ideas from CBGBs. On the other hand saying "Great Aussie Bands" is like saying "Great French Victories".No contest.
Names of low-rent soap stars not important.
How many beers had you consumed before typing that last paragraph?

South Africans who speak English as a first language say Pom or Pommy too. I think Rooineck woulod be Afrikaans.

So, vegemite is actually made from yeast. Last I heard, yeast is a kind of fungus, and thus not a vegetable.

Get the lawyers fired up, we have a class action lawsuit.

Did you know that Men at Work actually changed their lyrics to "a wedge of my sandwich" because the rest of the world didn't understand what vegemite was.

How is a fungus not a vegetable?

And I'm calling urban legend on "wedge of my sandwich".

veg·e·ta·ble (vĕj'tə-bəl, vĕj'ĭ-tə-) pronunciation
n.

1.
1. A plant cultivated for an edible part, such as the root of the beet, the leaf of spinach, or the flower buds of broccoli or cauliflower.
2. The edible part of such a plant.
3. A member of the vegetable kingdom; a plant.

--------------------

Animal Kingdom, Plant Kingdom, Fungus Kingdom, etc.

Might as well consider a steak a vegetable mate.

Well I guess Bob really *is* my Uncle. I did not know that there was a Fungus Kingdom, except that I think I have heard of the bathroom at PJ's referred to as such.
