In one of the best book recommendations I have received in a long time, I'm almost finished with Red A's copy of Charlie Wilson's War. Awesome book. Funny, not preachy, and filled with what I believe are called "outrageous highjinks".
I was Googling a bit to try and fill in the missing gaps in my knowledge of the area and the time (I was twelve when the Russian invaded, and I only remembered "Warm-water port" and "No Olympics"), and I found out some stuff. First, Gust Avrakotos died two years ago.
Second, and more disturbing, the book has been made into a movie which will be released in a couple of weeks. I bet the movie is going to suck. Tom Hanks is the Producer, and he'll have to insert all kinds of not-subtle-enough jabs about U.S. foreign policy at the time being too short-sighted, the CIA and the Russians being equally bad, etc. Unless I hear otherwise, it's getting marked as "wait for cable".
